Data Elements
Data elements are fields or checkboxes that contain our data. They condense lengthy, complicated reports into meaningful data.
Categories
There are six categories of data elements:
- Report (front page/Administrative)
- Offense
- Property (includes Vehicles)
- Victim
- Suspect (Offender)
- Arrest
Some data elements fit into multiple categories, such as Race, which is applicable for some victims and all suspects. For the purposes of navigation, Victim and Suspect data elements have been combined into one section, called Person.
Values
A data value is an option that a data element can have. For example, the Drug Type data element can contain the value Methamphetamine.
If we cannot fit all applicable values into a data element, we need to always choose the ones that are most:
- Specific – e.g. choose 06 Clothing over 19 Merchandise as a Property Category
- Appropriate – e.g. choose Playground over 53 Elementary School as the location if the incident occurred in the school’s field after hours, when school is not in session
- Meaningful – e.g. if Possessing, Transporting, Distributing, and Exploiting Children could all apply to a drug offense’s Criminal Activity, leave out Possessing since only three checkboxes can be selected and Possessing is often inherent to the other types of Criminal Activity
